英語で好漢（71）

春節をすぎたら、あっと言う間に梅が咲いて、花粉が飛んで……もう、すっかり春ですね。

気温もぐんぐん上がっています。

『絵巻水滸伝』の人気もぐんぐん上がりますように！

『絵巻水滸伝』の好漢のあだ名の英訳は、パール・バックの訳を基礎に、絵巻オリジナルを加えています。

英国在住の作家で、語学とセンスに優れた入江敦彦先生には、多大なご協力をいただきました。

さて、今週の好漢は？

The Fulfilled Star

The Embroidery Ape「ザ・エンブロイダリー エイプ」

ちょっと見慣れない単語ですが、“梁山泊の仕立屋”こと「地遂星　通臂猿　侯健」です。

「Embroidery」は“刺繍する・縫い取りする”、「Ape」は猿……“縫う猿”という感じしょうか。

絵巻の侯健の好漢画は鮮やかな刺繍糸を操っているので、ぴったりですね。

えっ、モンキー（monkey）じゃないの？と思うかもしれませんが、

モンキーはニホンザルのような「シッポのある小型の猿」、

エイプはゴリラ、チンパンジーなど「シッポのない大型のサル、あるいは類人猿」と区別があります。

ＳＦの名作『猿の惑星』も原題は『Planet of the Apes』。

侯健、一応、シッポはないですから、エイプです。

ちなみに、中国語だと猿がエイプ、猴がモンキーです。

ですので、侯健は“通臂猿”、孫悟空は“美猴王”となるわけですね。

His appearance was dark and brisk, so he was called 'The Embroidery Ape'.

Originally he was a craftsman tailor in the Wu-Wei.

But he experienced learning to fight with a lance with master 'The Pale Tiger'.

He met with master 'The Pale Tiger' again in battle of Wu-Wei city.

Embroidery Ape immediately changed sides and joined with the Liang-Shan Warriors.

He was drowned at the battle of Hang state during the Dark Guru War.
